The visual arts festival August in Art was started
as a project and first realized in 2000. The curators of the City art museums and
the private gallery owners, together with the artists
from Varna, decided to start a larger and more significant event connected with visual arts.

The international biennial
of prints which also takes place here, is connected
to only one type of plastic
art and cannot appease the need for an up-to-date, profound and more comprehensive presentation of the artistic processes
and phenomena
in contemporary art.

The visual arts forums existing in Bulgaria mainly present one separate art form (painting, sculpture, photography, prints,

videoart, performance, installations, etc.) or are rather smaller in view of number of participants and events, such as the Process/Space festival in Balchik and The Autumns Exhibitions in Plovdiv.

The creation of a large-scale significant national forum of the visual arts in the country with international participation aims at initiating a cultural event which will gradually
turn into an important international biennial.

With its multitude of art galleries and museums,
rich exhibition activity and
a number of renowned and popular in Bulgaria and abroad artists, Varna is one
of the biggest and most active centers of visual arts in the country.
It is possibly the best place for such a forum.

All other arts – music, the theater, ballet, the cinema, jazz and folklore – have their own renowned International festivals here.

The sea town of Varna offers the best possible conditions for the realization of such a feast of the arts – as is intrinsically any one festival - with its wonderful artistic atmosphere, with its possibilities to attract and gather in one place more artists, audiences and Bulgarian and foreign visitors,  and all that in the month of August when the other big artistic centers are bereft of an active artistic life.

Author of the concept and the slogan of the festival is the art critic Rumen Serafimov.
