REGULATIONS

The August in Art Festival is organized by the City Art Gallery – Varna, the Georgi Velchev Art Museum with the Regional Historical Museum of Varna, August in Art Foundation and a curator team of art critics and artists elected by the organizer institutions.

The curator team offers the concept and the project for each festival edition, attracts guest-curators and experts, invites personally the artists chosen for participation, selects and coordinates the offers and participation of the museums and the private galleries, carries out the festival.

The criteria for participation in the August in Art Festival are mainly related to the proven creative abilities and the high level professionalism of the visual expression, the vivid modern thinking and the innovative artistic interpretation.

Private galleries apply on their own for participation in the festival and they take consideration of the character, goals and criteria of the forum. The projects they offer are evaluated and accepted or rejected by the curator team.

The August in Art Festival presents for two months (August and September) about 100 of the most renowned Bulgarian artists and about 25 foreign guests in over 30 exhibitions and artistic events, located in over 20 museums, private galleries and other spaces in Varna.

The exhibitions and accompanying events are opened within ten days - from the 7 until the 17 of August. The forum takes place once in two years, and in the year without a festival, a theoretical symposium is organized.

The August in Art initiative is supported by the National Art Gallery-Sofia, the Union of the Bulgarian Artists and a

consultative council comprising renowned Bulgarian authors.

At this stage the festival is financed mainly by Varna Municipality, which regards the August in Art Festival as one of the most significant cultural forums it supports and promotes.

Additional financing comes from the National Centre for Museums, Galleries and Arts with the Ministry of Culture, from state institutions, from international projects and programs, from foundations and private sponsors, from the participating galleries and museums.
