AUGUST IN ART 2003
VARNA FESTIVAL OF VISUAL ARTS

Natural/Human

From August 7 until September 17, the fifth edition of the August in Art visual arts festival takes place in Varna. It presents 133 of the most renowned Bulgarian artists and 27 foreign authors from Germany, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Spain, Great Britain, Macedonia, the USA, Poland.

From August 7 until August 17, 40 exhibitions and artistic events are opening in 20 museums, private galleries and other spaces in Varna.

The festival is organized by the City Art Gallery - Varna, the Georgi Velchev Art Museum and the Varna Municipality. The curator team of the festival
is as follows: Rumen Serafimov, Vanko Urumov, Dimitar Traychev, Tsvetan Krastev.
Seven foreign and seven Bulgarian guest curators are invited to present their projects. Twenty art critics take part in the discussions.

The fifth festival edition passes under the Natural/Human motto - two essences and important concepts, especially up-to-date now in the context of the contemporary trends and state of the world and man. These notions conceptualize the tendency for rationalizing and constructing of the festival and exhibitions, the selection of the participants, the visual and notional interpretation of the works on their part.

The August in Art initiative is supported by the Union of the Bulgarian Artists, the National Art Gallery, the Sofia City Art Gallery and a consultative council comprising renowned Bulgarian authors.

After the four realized festival editions, its character, level and organization received the acclaim of the most authoritative Bulgarian critics, the artists and the admirers of art. They define it as a high quality, very significant and a very necessary forum of the visual arts in Bulgaria. In this sense the August in Art Festival has proven its worth, its significance and position in the cultural life of the nation.
